Calspan’s Tire Performance Testing team provides tire research and testing services. The unique capabilities of the laboratory are used to help innovators measure and understand tire performance and characteristics for all types of tires, including those used on automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, and aircraft; off-road; by the military; and in motorsports. The Manager, TIRF Operations manages maintenance of test facilities as well as supporting test operations.  Maintains and upgrades test facility’s electrical and mechanical equipment.  Implements process changes to improve operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

Manage administrative responsibilities and assume full responsibility for accomplishments of department functions.
  • Support execution of tire testing operations in an accurate and efficient manner. Organize test objectives and requirements and communicate them to the test crew.  Monitor test program progress and provide feedback to the test crew and customer.  Apply knowledge of engineering methodology to accurately complete and assign tasks within budget and schedule.  Assist in maintaining schedules, assessing risk, monitoring and improving data quality, and communication across all shifts.
  • Review maintenance and equipment performance reports and statistics to plan and modify maintenance activities. Recommend and implement changes to facility and equipment that are cost effective and compliant with safety standards.  Develop and maintain inventory system of critical spares and operating supplies.
  • Develop technical documentation including engineering plans, definition of requirements, test procedures, and related technical analysis reports. Develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the department.
  • Maintain engineering drawings which include layouts and three-dimensional models.

Qualifications

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering or related discipline.
  • 6+ years in testing or manufacturing environment
  • Previous experience in management position or;
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to above

 Preferred Knowledge / Ability:

  • Familiarity with experimental test methods
  • Familiarity with tire testing best practices
  • Understanding of complex systems including data acquisition, signal conditioning, and instrumentation
  • Facility maintenance methods and procedures
  • Ability to read, interpret, and manage engineering plans and specifications
  • Understanding of project management concepts (metrics, tracking, etc.)
  • Understanding of pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Python, Matlab, and 3D CAD design software experience

The salary range provided is a general guideline. Actual pay will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and other applicable qualifications.  Calspan is committed to pay transparency in compliance with applicable state and local laws.
